August 12, 1944 - May 24, 2025
It is with heavy hearts and deep gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Billie Wharton Cheek, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, who died on May 24, 2025.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Kate Wharton, and her sister, Kate Hockett. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Jack Allan Cheek, Jr.; her two sons, Robert Cheek of Orange Beach, AL, and Eric Cheek (Suzanne) of Vestavia Hills, AL; her three grandchildren, Taylor, Braiden, and Jackson Cheek; and her sister, Rose Chamblee of Greensboro, NC.
Billie was born on August 12, 1944, in Greensboro, NC, to William and Kate Wharton. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education from the Women's College at the University of North Carolina (Greensboro), where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Billie began her career as a high school Latin and English teacher before transitioning into healthcare administration, serving as a physician office manager in Durham, NC, as well as in Charlottesville, VA.
Billie was a devoted wife to Allan, with whom she shared a lifetime filled with love and partnership. Her warmth and generosity touched everyone around herwhether through a home-cooked meal, a thoughtful gesture, or her continuation of family traditions. She adored her family and took great pride and joy in celebrating her grandsons' achievements. Among the many friendships she held dear, Billie especially treasured those formed within her Lake Martin Bunko group. Billie also found fulfillment in her many hobbies, including needlepoint, cooking, reading, scuba diving, and gardening. She nurtured her garden with the same care and attention she gave to her loved ones, and her vibrant roses stood as a lasting symbol of her devotion.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, a remembrance can be made in her name to the Abor Day Foundation, 211 N. 12th Street, Lincoln, NE 68508; Children's Harbor, 1 Our Children's Hwy., Alexander City, AL 35010; or The Humane Society of Elmore County 255 Central Plank Road, Wetumpka, AL 36092.
