In Memory

David Willard (Dave) Edwards

David Willard (Dave) Edwards

1943 - 2021

David 'Dave' Willard Edwards, 77, of Greenville, SC passed away on July 4, 2021 as a result of injuries sustained from a recent fall. Dave was born on November 15, 1943 in Greensboro, NC to the late Hoyt Pervis and Mary Huffines Edwards.

He is survived by his loving wife of almost 55 years, Joan Johnstone Edwards; three sons, David Willard 'Will' Edwards, Jr. (Beth), Patrick Andrew 'Andy' Edwards (Tanya), and Benjamin 'Ben' Johnstone Edwards (Alissa); and two grandchildren, Patrick Arthur 'Artie' Edwards and Rachel Helms Edwards. He was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas Hoyt Edwards.

Dave was a gentleman in every sense of the word. A graduate of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and the University of South Carolina School of Law, Dave worked in banking and insurance for over 50 years and loved his profession so much he never thought to retire. Dave was full of grace and was equally comfortable holding court as he was holding space for others. Dave was a servant leader with a warrior heart which helped him in his roles as President of the Board of McCall Hospice House, Past President of the Greenville County Bar Association, Elder and choir member at Westminster Presbyterian Church.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, July 8, 2021 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Greenville, SC at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to McCall Hospice House, Greenville, SC; the music program at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Greenville, SC; Meals on Wheels, Greenville, SC; or the charity of your choosing.

Dave was the consummate gentleman and someone about whom you have only good memories. In the midst of great sadness for his family and good friends, I have one nice memory I will never forget: Dave came up to me at one of our very early reunions and asked me if I recalled the party our class had at the old O'Henry Hotel in downtown Greensboro - the band was Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs.  I told him of course I remembered the party whereupon he reminded me that he had driven me home in my car because I was in no condition to be behind the wheel.  I had been "overserved".  I then remembered.  This was long before designated drivers.  Dave simply "stepped up to the plate" and did the right thing.  Thank you Dave and Rest In Peace.

David and I reconnected in later life through music! He sang with the Furman Singers/Greenville Chorale, and I sang with Voices here in Chapel Hill. He would send me links to his live performances. Our 2 directors knew each other and our repertoires were similar. David and I would exchange DVDs of our recorded performances and I am holding here a large stack of the Greenville DVDs that I cherish.

What a mighty fine person our David was. I am fortunate to have retained that musical connection with David in our "later" years, but  I very much regret that we never got to sing Carmina Burana together... overlooking the Mediterranean on the Amalfi Coast... a cause not lost!

Rest in Peace my dear friend

Gracie

I remember Dave well although I only went to GSH for 2 years,  11th and 12th grades.  I'm so sorry that

he has died way too soon.

But want to comment on Greenville, SC,  where Dave lived and Cecie now lives. I started 1st Grade at

Augusta Circle School.  I well remember my father carrying me in kicking and crying because I did not  want to start school.  We lived on Phillips Lane which was close to the school, so if I could slip away during recess,

I would walk home!

My family attended Westminster Church and I think one of the ministers was Dr.  Chalmers.

I have many happy memories of Greenville and Dave.

David will always be remembered as a member of Greensboro Senior High Class of '62. Our senior year, we were Hall Monitors and could leave Class early to stand at our positions. We always said hello as we hastily passed each other going to our positions. May he Rest In Peace and Prayers to the family. He will be missed!

David and I lived close to each other growing up in Lindley Park. He has been a dear friend for many years. It was a joy to renew that friendship at our reunions. Thank you Dave for your friendship, I know you are now in a better place but we will miss you here.

Just returned home from some time at NC Outer Banks and wanted to offer a comment or two about my lifelong friend, Dave Edwards (see enclosed photos). As many know, Dave was part of our group of kids beginning perhaps with Kindergarten but certainly at Lindley Elem School in first grade in 1950. Friendship with Dave extended thru Lindley Jr High, GHS, and UNC at Chapel Hill and thereafter.

What I most remember about Dave was his willingness to help in most any situation, showing great compassion and empathy for your problem. A story many will not know---one summer when classmate Jerry Clark worked construction in Greensboro while attended UNC, he fell off a truck and busted his head rather severely. David found out about it and went to visit Jerry at the hospital and even his home upon release from the hospital. Dave was very concerned about his friend, Jerry, and offered to do several things for him, etc. More recently, I sought Dave's advice (which he freely gave on several occasions) regarding different ways to raise funds for two tax-exempt organizations. I really enjoyed David's friendship and of course will miss him. BUT, because he was a fellow faithful believer in Jesus Christ, I hope to see him again, praise God

The two photos are of Dave as Fire Captain in 2d grade I think, and Dave with Carol Sheets, another faithful follower of Jesus who I hope to see again---what a fine person she was/is. Out here. Paul G

I am sorry to hear of Dave passing. My prayers go out for his family at this time of need.

My Memory of Dave is the time we shared on the Football Team. Dave was a team player

and dedicated to work hard to win.

 May God Bless

Dave and I grew up together. We went to the same Church from young kids to when we went to college. Dave was someone I could always go to for advice and get the honest answer. It saddens me to know that he is now gone. We will miss him but know that one day we'll see him again. Rest In Peace Dave but a great loss for our class

I knew Dave from playing football with him at GHS.  We had a great team and shared many victories. I am sorry that he left us so early in life.  I pray that God will support his family during their grief..

I knew Dave in High School from several angles. First of all as a classmate, second as a football team player, and third as a member of Junior Joyce's. In all cases he was a true gentleman, true friend and honorable guy! I regret we never saw each other afterwards. My heart hurts for all those that gone before us. God bless David and his family.
